When Gov. Rick Scott visited the Landing Friday, he thought he was arriving only to speak at the Tea Party Tax Day rally. When he arrived at the riverfront shopping and entertainment center, Scott was surprised when he was asked to visit the Adams Class Museum store and was presented with a model ship.

It isn’t just any ship. It’s the USS Glover, a vessel Scott served on for 29 months while he was in the U.S. Navy.

Right, Dan Bean, president of the Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association, Vice President Joe Snowberger, Scott and model builder Barry Kryspin are shown with the scale model that Scott said he accepted on behalf of the state and plans to keep it in the Governor’s Mansion in Tallahassee.

The association is raising funds to bring the former guided missile destroyer USS Charles F. Adams to Jacksonville to serve as a floating museum and interactive tourist attraction on the Southbank Riverwalk.

The ship was home-ported at Naval Station Mayport for 21 years until 1990 and is currently on “donation hold” at a shipyard in Philadelphia.
