Duval crime rate drops

Duval County crimes dropped 12.1 percent last year over 2009, reports the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

According to the department, Duval County’s tally of 52,356 crimes in 2009 fell to 46,019 crimes in 2010.

The crime rate of 5,814 per 100,000 population dropped 12.2 percent to 5,106, it reported.

In addition, department numbers show that Duval County’s murder rate dropped to the No. 2 spot, behind Miami-Dade.

Among Duval County’s crime report:

• Murders were down almost 20 percent, from 101 in 2009 to 81 last year.

• Forcible rape was up 39 percent, from 238 to 331.

• Robberies were down 29 percent, from 2,491 to 1,773.

• Aggravated assault was down 17 percent, from 4,383 to 3,657.

• Burglaries were down 17 percent, from 11,978 to 9,998.

• Larceny was down 7.3 percent, from 30,296 to 28,095.

• Motor vehicle thefts were down 27 percent, from 2,869 to 2,084.
