The Daily Record surveyed the 2011-15 City Council members about the current Council year. Their responses to five questions will be published over the coming weeks.
Clay Yarborough, a Republican, is a UPS human resources supervisor.
How have you prepared both personally and professionally for your role on City Council?
A quote I saw on a business marquee board in Arlington read, “Faith is not a bridge over troubled waters, but a pathway through them.” My personal preparation is placing my faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ to help me in the second term just as He faithfully did in the first. With regard to professional preparation, UPS continues to be a considerate employer when it comes to the need to balance work priorities and Council responsibilities.
Are you satisfied with your Council assignments and why do you believe you were chosen for them?
Yes, I am. I committed to Council President Stephen Joost that I would continue to advocate for fiscal responsibility and accountability when it comes to City budget/spending issues in the Finance Committee and also that I would be as diligent as possible when vetting policy matters and other items as they appear before the Rules Committee.
Which committees or assignments would you like next?
The current Council year just started July 1, so the main priorities are Finance and Rules for this year and then considering committees for next year at a later time.
Is serving on the Council a part-time or full-time job?
It is officially a part-time job, but sometimes feels like full-time. I like devoting a good amount of time to it.
What is the first piece of legislation you have introduced or will introduce in this Council year?
If we can get the details worked out soon, hopefully a bill to strengthen the JSO’s Crime-Free Multi-Family Housing Program, which assists in improving safety standards within many of the city’s apartment complexes.
