• Gov. Rick Scott has appointed Jacksonville attorney Melissa Nelson of McGuireWoods to the Fourth Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission. Nelson has practiced with McGuireWoods since 2009. She succeeds Gregory Strickland for a term that began Friday and ends July 1, 2015.

• JCCI Forward kicks off its 2011-12 year at a reception 5:30-7:30 p.m. today at Layla’s of San Marco along Hendricks Avenue. In attendance will be psychic medium Judy Zarnes. The event is free and open to the public, but RSVP to www.jcci.org.

• A transportation project in Northeast Florida recently won one of the America’s Transportation Awards. The interchange at Interstates 10 and 95, dubbed “The Big I,” won an “On Time” category in the medium project division. The other main categories were “Under Budget” and “Innovative Management.”

• University of North Florida economics professor Paul Mason is the keynote speaker today at the quarterly dinner for the IMA Jacksonville Chapter of management accountants. Mason is director of the Local Economic Indicator Project. The meeting is 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Deercreek Country Club. For information, email [email protected].

• The Atlantic Beach Election is Tuesday. Polls are open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. at the four precincts at Atlantic Beach City Hall, the Adele Grage Cultural Center, Community Presbyterian Church and Oceanside Church of Christ. Seats on the ballot are mayor/commissioner seat one (Mike Borno and Mark Tomaski); commissioner – Seat 2 (John Fletcher and Maria Mark) and commissioner - Seat 3 (Paul B. Parsons.
