The Daily Record surveyed the 2011-15 City Council members about the current Council year. Robin Lumb, a Republican, is co-owner of a commercial printing business.
How have you prepared both personally and professionally for your role on Council?
Since moving to Jacksonville in 1980, I’ve been active in many community and civic organizations and have frequently been asked to serve in leadership roles. This level of community involvement has provided valuable insight into the concerns that our citizens have about local government and what they expect.
Are you satisfied with your Council assignments and why do you believe you were chosen for them?
I’m one of only two Council members to be selected to serve on three committees. I’m looking forward to making a positive contribution wherever I can. Since I’ve been active in historic preservation, I’m hopeful that my work on the Land Use & Zoning Committee will be especially beneficial.
Which committees or assignments would you like next, and why?
I would probably be in a position to make a broader contribution going forward if I rounded out my experience by serving on the Finance Committee and the Rules Committee for the 2012-13 legislative year.
Is serving on the Council a part-time or full-time job?
Part-time.
What’s the first piece of legislation you have introduced or will introduce in this Council year?
It will probably involve privatizing certain City services through competitive bidding provided there is a significant benefit to taxpayers. The caveat is to find areas where there are enough private contractors to ensure the City will not be the captive of any one vendor.
