Judge Jean Johnson serves as the chairperson of the Fourth Circuit Pro Bono Committee. Her leadership has helped keep pro bono involvement in the Fourth Judicial Circuit developing and growing. Recently she submitted this editorial as a “thank you” to the hundreds of pro bono attorneys serving low-income and vulnerable clients every day here in Northeast Florida.

“It’s time for us to recognize the service of local attorneys to the poor. Hundreds of local attorneys uphold the highest standards of professionalism by providing legal services in civil matters to those who cannot afford such services,” said Johnson.

“According to a Florida Tax Watch recent study, the total economic impact of civil legal assistance on the Florida economy is significant. Over 3,300 jobs were created in the state economy, and legal aid services to low-income persons generate $4.78 of economic impact for every dollar donated to legal aid programs. Florida communities receive a 378 percent return on our investment in civil legal services for the poor,” she said.

Johnson pointed out that attorneys have been providing many pro bono services in areas such as business law, wills and advance directives for senior citizens, foreclosures and the “Ask a Lawyer” programs.

“The need for these services has increased by more than one-third. The Florida Supreme Court has asked that each attorney participate in the ‘ONE’ Campaign which means one client, one attorney, one promise. Jacksonville attorneys are stepping forward to serve the underserved. It is with deep gratitude that our community says ‘thank you’ to those who donate their time in the cause of equal justice under the law,” said Johnson.

Thanks to all pro bono attorneys involved in assisting those less fortunate with civil legal services. Thanks also to Judge Johnson for her leadership in the Fourth Judicial Circuit.
