Janet Stanko has the heart of a warrior and a focus on environmental preservation, said Carol Grimes, who makes an award annually in the name of the Grimes Foundation.

For her efforts, Stanko, chair of the Northeast Florida group of the Sierra Club, received the 2011 Bob and Carol Grimes Environmental Activist Award presented Friday at the Civic Round Table of Jacksonville.

Grimes and Carole Adams of the Duval Audubon Society presented this year’s award.

Stanko was unable to attend the meeting. Friend Janet Nelson received it on her behalf and read prepared remarks thanking the group for the award.

Grimes detailed Stanko’s environmental accolades that included spearheading the Amendment 4 campaign, which was defeated as a referendum during the 2010 general election.

The Grimes Foundation was founded in honor of the late Bob Grimes, Carol’s husband, as a way to understand, preserve and protect the environment and its wildlife. The award is given annually to an environmental steward.

Neil Armingeon of the St. Johns Riverkeeper received the award last year.
