Leadership Jacksonville will honor The Haskell Company founder Preston Haskell and lawyer Bill Birchfield as community trustees at the 17th Annual Celebration of Leadership event scheduled 6 p.m. April 12 at the Hyatt Downtown. The late Gertrude Peele, a community advocate and volunteer, will be memorialized with the Frederick H. Schultz Lifetime Achievement Award.
• The City issued building permits for New Tech Construction Corp. to change existing antennas on a cell tower for AT&T at 7619 Plants Road at a cost of $24,799.94; and Hardin Construction Co. LLC will renovate Hampton Inn hotel guest rooms and public areas at 1331 Prudential Drive at a cost of $25,000.
• Galina Schott has been elected as the Southside Business Men’s Club’s second woman president since its inception in 1932. Her term begins Jan. 4 and 2012 is the club’s 80th anniversary. Born and raised in Eastern Europe, Schott earned a master’s degree in civil engineering from Kiev University. She and her 9-year-old son immigrated to the United States in 1991. She learned English, became a U.S. citizen and earned an MBA from Jacksonville University. She’s a financial adviser with North Florida Financial Corp. The first woman to serve as club president was banker Belinda Mitchell in 2006.
