The show will go on.

The New Year’s Eve fireworks show that will help celebrate 2011 and ring in 2012 will take place on the Downtown riverfront at the start of the New Year because of a public-private partnership between Visit Jacksonville and Pyro Shows.

“This is an excellent chance to visit Jacksonville’s Downtown during one of the most exciting times of year,” Mayor Alvin Brown said in a news release announcing the event.

“As we all continue to navigate our way through difficult economic times, it is encouraging to see organizations comes together to put on a great show for thousands of people,” he said.

“These types of public-private partnerships are setting a stronger foundation for Jacksonville’s future as a more vibrant hub of activity.”

The total cost of the show will be $16,000, according to Tiffany Valla Hutto, City Special Events media support specialist.

The City will contribute $2,500 that will fund event security; Visit Jacksonville will fund $3,500 for the barge from which the fireworks will be ignited; and Pyro Shows is offering an inkind donation of $10,000 for the fireworks.

Valla said about 50,000 people are expected to come Downtown for the show.

The show will be about 10 minutes and is presented by the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl and the City.
