• Jacksonville welcomed spring the past few days with temperatures hovering around 80 degrees, and another rite of spring is right around the corner. Seasonal Neptune Beach watering hole The Lemon Bar plans to open for the season March 4 and will offer food service this year.
• Speaking of spring, it begins March 20, but daylight saving time starts a week earlier, March 13.
• Yet one more sign of spring: Girl Scout cookies are being delivered.
• Speaking of the Girl Scouts, the Girl Scouts of Gateway Council’s 23rd Annual Women of Distinction luncheon is drawing closer. It’s March 30 at the Hyatt Downtown. This year’s honorees are Robin Albaneze, Betty Asque Davis, Davalu Parrish, Judith Rodriguez, Laine Silverfield and Cindy Stover.
• For planning purposes, the Internal Revenue Service said taxpayers have until April 18 to file their tax returns this year because Emancipation Day, a holiday observed in the District of Columbia, falls this year on April 15. Taxpayers requesting an extension will have until Oct. 17. The IRS expects to receive more than 140 million individual tax returns this year.
• Nominations are sought for the 42nd Annual EVE Awards for women in education, volunteer service and employment. The award luncheon is June 3 with keynote speaker retired Rear Adm. Marty Evans, the first woman to command a U.S. Naval Station. E-mail [email protected].
• A chance to strengthen the mind and body presents itself this weekend during “Power Walk at the Arboretum.” Naturalist Rachel Sulkers will lead a power-walking tour of the Arboretum Saturday and the walks occur regularly on the fourth Saturday of every month. The walk will start at 9 a.m. at the kiosk at 1445 Millcoe Road and last about an hour.
