Why did you become a judge?
I always felt that being a Judge was the highest calling in the legal profession. I served as an assistant state attorney for five years, followed by 18 years in private practice. My experience as a trial lawyer prepared me for service as a judge. Also, I received encouragement to seek the office from many lawyers whose judgment I respected.
What do you know now that you didn’t when you were practicing before the bench?
First, judges work much harder than lawyers think they do. Our caseloads are higher than they should be because the Legislature is unable to fund new judgeships, even though the Florida Supreme Court has, for years, certified the need for more judges. Second, judges are required to make hard decisions, none of which are taken lightly. Every decision affects a person’s life. A great deal of thought is given to each decision. All of us strive to make the correct decision.
Community involvement:
A judge’s opportunity for community involvement is greatly restricted by the Code of Judicial Conduct. However, former Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court R. Fred Lewis saw a need and started the Justice Teaching Program. It is open to attorneys and, thankfully, judges. These volunteers speak at local schools on various aspects of the legal system and how it was formed. It is amazing how little our students know about the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, and other fundamental concepts that help govern and helped form our society. It is a very rewarding program and gives students the opportunity, most for the first time, to interact with real (not TV) lawyers and judges.
What are your interests outside the courtroom?
Primarily, my family. However, anyone who knows me is aware of my interest in supporting the University of Florida, both academic and athletic programs.
What is the last book you read or are reading?
“Decision Points,” by former President George W. Bush and “Through My Eyes,” by Tim Tebow.
