• San Jose Catholic School 6th-7th grade teacher Carla Chin recently completed her week at the Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy program at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala. “We were working on a mock shuttle mission and I was assigned to be Mission Specialist 1 for the mission,” she said of the photo at right. “I was able to have an extra vehicular activity with a partner, and we spent 45 minutes in a simulated weightless chair setting up a Solar Array.”

• All the tickets have been distributed to the public for the One Vision, One City Interfaith breakfast scheduled at 8 a.m. Thursday at the Hyatt Downtown. Only those with tickets will be admitted to the event, which is part of the inaugural events for Mayor-elect Alvin Brown.

• Liberty Furniture at 5555 University Blvd. is going out of business after 87 years of operation. The liquidation sale began Monday. Liberty Furniture was started in 1924 in a storefront Downtown along Adams Street. Founder Herman Weiss sold items from furniture to roller skates and, as an immigrant, named his store “Liberty.” The store has supported three generations of family. Owner Marvin Sherman said closing was a difficult decision. He said the company had experienced economic downturns before, but always managed to rebound. “However, this decline — dating back to 2006 — has been longer and deeper than anything we’ve experienced. Our family has decided to close Liberty, move in a new direction and pursue other ventures,” said Sherman.

• Wolfson Children’s Hospital and its agency, “three” in Atlanta, received five Aster Awards, an awards program that recognizes excellence in healthcare marketing and advertising. The “Wolfson Print/Outdoor Campaign” received a Bronze Award in the “Total Advertising Campaigns” category. The “Remission” outdoor billboard was recognized with a Gold Award in the “Billboard Design-Single” category and the “Remission” print ad received a Silver Award in the “Magazine Advertising-Single” category. The “Decisions” TV spot won a Gold Award in the “TV/Video Advertising-Single” category. The “Wolfson TV Campaign” received a Gold Award in the “TV/Advertising-Series” category.
