Good weather and good food was enough to draw a crowd Saturday to the “Super Chili Bowl Charity Cook-Off” organized by The Jacksonville Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section to benefit the Sanctuary on 8th Street.

Ten teams offered a range of chili varieties from the traditional bean and beef to vegan.

Both the judges and guests chose the chili by the Solomon Lodge #20 Free and Accepted Masons, led by attorney Jim Krause, as the best. The team also won for meatiest chili.

Guests could also sample desserts and bid on silent auction items, which included a foursome to the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course.

“Eric Roberson and Kim Law did a great job putting this together, especially when you consider it was a first-year event,” said Lee Wedekind, YLS president. “We hope it becomes an annual event.”

The cookoff was held outside of the atrium on the lake side of Florida Coastal School of Law in Baymeadows.

“It was very well received and the legal community really showed up for a good cause,” said Roberson. “It wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Florida Coastal School of Law and its volunteers.”

Area judges also volunteered their time to judge the cookoff, including U.S. District Judge Harvey Schlesinger, U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Morris, Circuit Judge Gregg McCaulie and Duval County Judge Ronald Higbee.

“This was a tough job because they were all so good,” said Higbee.

The event also did some good for The Sanctuary on 8th Street, which serves children that are at-risk of dropping out of school. It offers after-school and summer school programs to help children develop into healthy and productive adults.
