More than 1,000 people came Downtown to the Osborn Center Thursday to have lunch and raise funds through the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary’s 25th Annual “Celebrity Chefs Tasting Luncheon and Silent Auction.”

Since its debut in 1987, the event has raised almost $2 million to support the Salvation Army’s programs, said Northeast Florida Area Commander Maj. Dean Hinson.

Proceeds from this year’s luncheon will provide scholarships for homeless children who attend the Salvation Army Child Development Center and support services provided at the Towers Memorial Social Services Center, the Adult Rehabilitation Center and the Salvation Army Senior Center.

“It’s a marvelous day to celebrate what the Salvation Army does in this community and we couldn’t do it without you,” Hinson told the more than 100 volunteer chefs before they staffed their stations in the convention center.
