The May First Wednesday Art Walk was all about the St. Johns River and the importance of saving the signature waterway.

At Hemming Plaza, the Eco Latino Media Group closed Laura Street in front of the Main Library and the Museum of Contemporary Art to set a stage and runway for a fashion show. A portion of the proceeds from “Love ur Mother” benefit the St. Johns Riverkeeper.

Nature photographer Michael Censi was showing his talent for furniture design at the Art Center Cooperative on West Adams Street. He made a table, which he said would make a great desk, from driftwood gathered from the St. Johns River and a slab of “sinker cypress” from the Hillsborough River.

“It was a 300-year-old tree that was submerged for another 150 years,” he said.

Art Walk started an hour early at Downtown’s newest lounge and live music venue when the ribbon was cut to open Burro Bar at Ocean and Adams streets. The bar is a partnership between the Burro Bags owners and the operators of Lomax Lounge and Shantytown.

The watering hole has a Cinco de Mayo party on tap and more bands are booked for the weekend.

The next First Wednesday Art Walk is 5-9 p.m. June 1, rain or shine.
