The JBA Law Day events continued Tuesday as items were collected from locations throughout Jacksonville to benefit Duval County Public Elementary Schools and the Downtown Ecumenical Service Council.
Assistant Public Defenders Michael Kalil and Tricia Rado organized the drives to provide art supplies for the elementary schools and toiletries for the council. The art supplies included pens, paper, paint, crayons and computer software, among other things. The council requested donations of small toiletry items such as soaps, shampoos, dental care, deodorant and razors. Contributors included the law firms of Terrell Hogan, Tanner Bishop, Marks Gray, Murphy & Anderson, Holland & Knight, Moseley Prichard, Brennan Manna & Diamond and The Bedell Firm, as well as Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, the Public Defender’s Office and The Jacksonville Bar Association.
Collection bins were placed at the location from April 9–29.
Kalil explained why he chose to volunteer to organize the drive.
“Our job as assistant public defenders is really just about taking the skill set we possess and using it to serve our community. I believe part of our responsibility, not just as APDs but also as citizens of Jacksonville, require us to get involved in things going on around our city,” said Kalil.
“People don’t realize what a difference something like a toothbrush can make, not only on a person’s physical state but also on their outlook in life. We are not just helping people with their health and appearance; we are helping them feel better about themselves and giving them necessary tools for improved health and wellness,” he added.
