It’s an oasis.
That’s how Jim Colney, manager of Reddi Arts on the Southbank at 1037 Hendricks Ave., describes Jacksonville’s largest art supply store.
“When people come here, we want them to leave the world behind and allow their creative juices to flow,” he said.
One way people allow those juices to flow is by taking up painting. The store offers demonstrations, workshops and classes for budding artists to pick up a pencil or brush and start creating.
Colney said the classes and other events attract a wide range of participants. Some are artists and some want to be artists.
“A lot of people have always wanted to paint, but just never got around to it. Classes are an excellent way to explore painting,” said Colney.
Reddi Arts offers classes in watercolor, acrylic painting, comic book illustration and cartooning, printmaking and bookbinding. Classes are taught by experienced artists and often showcase a particular product line of art supplies.
Colney said the artists who assist the classes and demonstrations are chosen based on their talent for sharing what they do. The classes attract a diverse group of people from all ages and walks of life.
“People who attend the classes are from their late teens to more than 90 years old. It’s interesting to see the generations come together,” he said.
The classes offer students a chance to try the hobby before investing in supplies, which can be as little as $20 for some charcoal pencils and a sketch pad.
“Some people just come to the store and buy paint and brushes and take them home and start painting. Others prefer some instruction,” said Colney.
One person who has been inspired to pick up a paintbrush is Colney. He said he has taken up acrylic painting and discovered his “creative energy.”
He’s also learned some of the philosophy associated with painting. Conley compared creating art to playing golf.
“Painting can be very relaxing or it can be just like work, and unless you set aside time each week to paint, you probably won’t find the time,” he said.
