• Jacksonville Community Council Inc. will formally release its latest study, “Recession Recovery… and Beyond: Job Creation, Employment and Improving Northeast Florida’s Competitiveness,” June 15 at the Hyatt. Led by Chair Elaine Brown, the 71st community study has findings, conclusions and recommended actions on retaining and creating jobs and economic growth, each of which will be presented during the 11:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. release event. Tickets are $20 for JCCI members, $25 for nonmembers and $250 for corporate tables of eight.
• The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens will offer free admission to all military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The offer also is extended to retired military and their families. Valid military identification is required. The Cummer has partnered with Blue Star Museums program, initiated by Blue Star Families, a nonpartisan, nonprofit network of military families that support and connect military families, to offer the promotion.
• Correction: The free concert being performed as part of the June 1 “Making Music” First Wednesday Art Walk will be performed by the Friends of the Jacksonville Symphony.
• Back to school: Jacksonville University is welcoming back one of its own. Shirin Firouzabadian Brenick, a 1979 JU graduate, will return June 13 to become director of alumni relations. For the last decade, she was president of August Worthington International LLC.
• Thinking inside the box: BungoBox, an Orlando-based business that rents and delivers reusable plastic moving boxes, added a Jacksonville franchise Thursday. It will service the Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties. The Jacksonville franchise will be owned by Kevin Booth, Bob Booth and Ron Brown and set up shop in the Mandarin area.
• Numerous decorations were awarded to Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office members during its May Meritorious Awards Ceremony on Thursday, but awards for two officers were their efforts in the line of duty. Sherriff John Rutherford presented Officers William Shrum and Ronald Bilyew with the Purple Heart award after both were shot in the line of duty by criminal means March 20.
