The baskets that are Downtown Vision Inc.’s “Great Streets” program have flourished over the spring and summer.
With low temperatures in the upper 30s predicted this weekend, the heat-tolerant varieties that have been profusely blooming won’t last much longer.
DVI Director of District Services Any Harrell said the 65 baskets installed along East Bay, Newnan, Ocean and East Adams streets will be replanted with a new mix of plants that will thrive in Downtown’s winter weather.
She said DVI has learned a lot about container gardening 8 feet above the sidewalk. Each block receives a different amount of sunlight and the urban environment offers specific gardening situations.
“We have some shady streets and we have some sunny streets and it’s very hot with the baskets next to the buildings. It’s challenging Downtown,” Harrell said.
The new plants will be installed in December.
“We have to wait until the local nurseries have enough cold-weather plants available,” said Harrell.
