Community involvement: For the past two years, I have been on the board of directors for Girls Inc. of Jacksonville. Girls Inc. of Jacksonville (formerly known as the Girls Club of America) has been operating in Jacksonville for more than 40 years and is dedicated to helping girls ages 6 and up to be self-confident, responsible and well-rounded individuals by delivering research-based, age-appropriate, after-school and summer educational and sports programs. The primary areas of Girls Inc. programming focus on literacy, math and science, career and life planning, health, leadership and community action, sports and adventure, self-reliance and life skills, and culture and heritage. Today, Girls Inc. of Jacksonville serves more than 1,700 girls every day in after-school programs, outreach and summer camps.

How did you get involved?
I was first introduced to Girls Inc. at its Girl’s Rights Week Reception. I was impressed with Girl’s Inc.’s mission and the services it provided to young girls. After speaking with several of the members and participants of Girls Inc., I knew that it was an organization that I wanted to be involved with. I simply asked what I could do to help.

How can someone else get involved?
You can contact Girls Inc. of Jacksonville at 731-9933 or visit the organization at www.girlsincjax.org. Twice a year, Girl’s Inc. organizes a “Daddy-Daughter” dance. The next dance is Feb. 25 at the Hyatt Downtown and help is always needed for decorating for the dance or gathering silent auction items. Dads, be sure to get your tickets to the dance early!

What have you learned/achieved through the experience?
A little bit of time and attention can go a long way in making a positive difference in a young girl’s life. Taking the time to help others helps put perspective in your own life.

What was the last book you read or are reading?
“Water for Elephants,” by Sara Gruen
