The Girl Scouts of Gateway Council welcomed its past Women of Distinction honorees to a reception last week and outlined plans to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts in 2012.

Next year, the organization plans an anniversary lunch in January to recognize the almost 140 women honored since 1989 as Women of Distinction. The group intends to resume honoring new Women of Distinction designees in subsequent years.

Girl Scouts of Gateway Council also plans an evening fundraising celebration April 14 in the courtyard of Episcopal School of Jacksonville and a dedication of the Women of Distinction cabins April 28 at the North Fork Leadership Center in Middleburg.

The North Florida Council serves more than 13,000 girls in 16 counties. Girl Scouts was founded by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912 in Savannah.

Women of Distinction Co-Chairwoman Teala Milton Johnson said the council will produce a yearbook of all the women honored.
