How did you get involved?
At a very early age, my parents instilled in me the value and necessity of giving back to the community in which I live. Growing up in Jacksonville, I was involved in a variety of service organizations and while attending college in South Carolina, I organized groups of students to visit nursing homes in the area. When I moved back to Jacksonville, I focused my interests and volunteer work on children. The Women’s Board of Wolfson Children’s Hospital does a remarkable job raising critical funds necessary to ensure no child goes without the state-of-the-art health care he or she needs. My work with the Women’s Board naturally led to involvement with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Jacksonville, where out-of-the-area children being treated at local hospitals and clinics, along with their families, are provided lodging and other services in an incredibly comfortable and warm environment.
How can someone else get involved?
Come to our events or the events sponsored by the organization that most interests or motivates you. Ask questions while you’re there and ask what you can do to help. Every organization needs your time as much, if not more, than they need your money. The Women’s Board of Wolfson Children’s Hospital is about to kick off its annual Art & Antiques Show running from Dec. 1-4 (visit www.artandantiquesshow.com for more information and tickets) There is an exciting new calendar of events from the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Jacksonville in 2012.
What have you learned/achieved through the experience?
Everyone can most certainly do something to improve our community or the life of another. Intelligence and/or financial status have no bearing on our ability to show kindness.
What was the last book you read or are reading?
“Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin.
