Introducing them as the “A-Team,” Mayor Alvin Brown appointed Jacksonville University Athletic Director Alan Verlander, NBA Hall of Famer Artis Gilmore and mayoral special assistant Tonisha Landry-Gaines to positions within his administration Monday. Verlander will become the Sports and Entertainment director and lead all of the City’s efforts to lure sporting events and build its profile, Brown said. Verlander will make $179,416 and report directly to Brown. Landry-Gaines has been appointed to serve as Special Events director and has been with the City since Brown took office. During that time, she arranged events such as the mayor’s Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast and Brown’s business summit. She will make $98,000. Gilmore will serve as Brown’s “Ambassador for Sports, Entertainment and Physical Fitness,” a new position. Gilmore will “help cultivate relationships to attract major sporting events, trade shows and special events while serving people of all ages to adapt to healthier lifestyle,” according to a news release. He will make $60,000.
