For the past 25 years, Monica Day hasn’t always had “just another day at the office.”
Day, vice president of executive operations for Petway Companies Inc., is the assistant to Jacksonville business and civic leader Tom Petway.
Petway, a former partner with the Jacksonville Jaguars and an insurance industry executive, still is a popular figure in town and Day still works with the family’s daily matters.
“I told him when he retired that it was him, not me,” she said.
In her role, she has made friends and connections, and learned a lot.
A day in the office could include relaying messages, assembling documents, traveling to a World Series game or meeting a U.S. president.
Day said the randomness has been part of the fun.
“You have to be spontaneous and flexible,” she said. “I loved it, because I never knew.”
When Petway and his partners launched the Touchdown Jacksonville! movement to bring the National Football League’s 30th franchise to town, Day was there to help.
“I have seen some history made,” she said.
Now she’s taking her organizational skills to another realm.
Day is an avid participant in The Church of Eleven22, a nondenominational church setting up in part of a former Walmart building at Beach Boulevard and San Pablo Road.
A capital campaign began Jan. 1 and so far has raised $5.6 million of the $7 million goal.
Day said she does “whatever the church needs” and said she is happy to be a part of the ground-floor effort and a part of its history.
The church has more than 2,000 members and is slated to open in September.
“It’s worked out really, really great,” she said.
