Scott Carpenter of Medtronic Inc. displays the company’s Fusion ENT navigation system as Daniel Clark (center) of Medtronic and Adam McCain look on during a ground-breaking ceremony at the company’s Southpoint Drive North operations. Doctors use the system to guide surgical instruments to treatment areas. The equipment will be produced by Medtronic’s Surgical Technologies Division, which plans a $14 million, 75,000-square-foot expansion that will result in 175 new jobs with salaries averaging $80,000 annually. “A well-trained workforce, the proximity to major universities, the business climate, an exceptional quality of life, and local and state support were all key factors that made Jacksonville by far the most attractive location for our expansion,” said Mark Fletcher, senior vice president of Medtronic and president of Medtronic’s Surgical Technologies Division. In August, City Council approved an incentives package that totaled $2.53 million of City and state incentives, consisting of a Qualified Target Industry Tax Refund and a Recapture Enhanced Value grant.
