As our community continues to face a tight economy and shrinking budgets, the Daily Record has established this feature that each week reports the efforts of local nonprofit organizations and the individuals and businesses that support them.

Bailey Publishing & Communications invites all members of the local nonprofit community to email news, announcements and success stories to [email protected] or to [email protected].

We also encourage our readers to become more aware of the needs of these worthy organizations as they continue to provide valuable services with reduced resources.

Salon PK treats CHS teens to beauty day

On Aug. 19, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., Salon PK will host the 2nd Annual “Books and Beauty” back-to-school event for Children’s Home Society of Florida’s residential group care teens.

“Community service is an important part of my life and whenever possible I find ways to give back to those in need,” said Salon PK owner Pekela Riley. “Providing these young women with new hairstyles shows them they are important and have community members like me and my wonderful team of stylists who support them!”

This event has been organized to provide free hair services to 16 teens living in CHS’ residential cottages for teen mothers and sibling groups. In addition to the free services, Riley will provide the teens with school supplies and hair care products from her personal product line.

Salon PK is at 3733 Southside Blvd. Suite 10.

Stylists will provide the teens with a wide-range of full services, including relaxers, precision cuts, shampoo and sets, which range from $45 to more than $100.

KC Crave Charity Night nets $5,000

On Aug. 5th, Restaurant KC Crave hosted “The College Crave,” a charity night for Take Stock in Children of Duval County. More than 100 guests attended and raised more than $5,000, which included silent auction items donated by community supporters. All proceeds will be used to assist Take Stock in Children to grow and reach a greater number of students.

The three-hour cocktail party allowed guests to be the first to experience Jacksonville Beach’s new restaurant, which opened Saturday. The restaurant has a big-city bar with tap room and features live music Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. An enclosed outdoor dining section also has been added.

Take Stock in Children was established in 1995 as a not-for-profit that provides an opportunity for low-income and at-risk students to escape the cycle of poverty through successful education. Its funding enables them to offer selected students a college scholarship, volunteer mentors, in-school support and hope for a better life.

Nonprofit awards 8 college scholarships

Elizabeth Edgar Hall Inc., a local nonprofit, announces its 2012 scholarship recipients. Elizabeth Edgar Hall Inc. has helped women in Jacksonville make a better life for themselves for more than a century. The organization opened on West Beaver Street in Downtown Jacksonville in the early 1900s as a boarding house for single career women who could not otherwise afford safe lodging.

In the 1970s, proceeds from the sale of the hall were placed into a trust fund to provide loans to local women attending Jacksonville’s post-secondary schools.

In 1991, the foundation switched from making educational loans to the current practice of granting scholarship awards.

A reception will be held in the fall to honor the recipients.

Sauer gives $10,000 to military-related groups

Sauer Inc. recently announced its donation of $10,000 in funds to benefit The Military and Veterans Resource Center at the University of North Florida and Wounded Warrior Project.

The funds were raised at the 2012 Patriots’ Outpost, a hospitality venue at The Players Championship at Sawgrass, which provides food and beverages and fellowship to all active, retired, and reserve armed forces personnel and their dependents.

This year, Sauer again participated in the sponsorship of the Patriots’ Outpost. Sauer employees and volunteers from UNF spent the week of The Players raising money through donations and a prize drawing to benefit the two programs.

The Military and Veterans Resource Center at UNF is the primary campus advocate for military and veteran students, and provides assistance with academic advising, tutoring, counseling, disability accommodations, veteran programming, benefits information and financial and medical assistance. In addition, it facilitates referrals to state and federal resources and services.

Wounded Warrior Project assists wounded warriors and their families through a holistic approach to their recovery using combat stress programs, career and education services, or adaptive sporting opportunities.
