Demolition began Wednesday on the Worman’s Bakery and Deli building at 204 Broad St. Downtown. The view from the Duval County Courthouse at noon Friday showed piles of bricks and rubble, which were being removed. They were all that remained from the business that closed three years ago after more than 85 years in business. The deli and bakery served generations of customers Downtown since at least 1923. Property records show the structure was built in 1909. It is owned by the Pearl Leibowitz Life Estate. Owners had said they hoped to keep the business open until courthouse construction was completed, but contract and construction issues delayed the courthouse opening until June 18.
