The Jacksonville Bar Association Pro Bono Committee extends a word of sincere thanks to Circuit Judge Jean M. Johnson for her message to attorneys in this week's Pro Bono Spotlight column. We also are deeply appreciative of her ongoing leadership in supporting the pro bono efforts of the many attorneys who provide legal services to low-income people free of charge. She has served as the chairwoman of the 4th Circuit Pro Bono Committee since its beginning, providing a foundation for pro bono service throughout Northeast Florida.

Judge Jean M. Johnson's message to 4th Circuit attorneys:

The 4th Judicial Circuit has the longest continuing existing pro bono committee in Florida. There always has been a commitment in this part of the state to the highest standards of professionalism in our dealings with other lawyers and our clients and how we represent ourselves in the community.

The committee exists to make it easier for attorneys to meet the professionalism requirements of seeking civil justice for those who cannot afford legal help.

The Florida Supreme Court has recognized the need for services has increased by one-third. Tax Watch found the return to our community has an economic impact of $4.78 for each dollar donated to legal aid. There are many programs and projects in the areas of business law, wills and advanced directives for senior citizens, mediation and the "Ask-A-Lawyer" program. No one has to leave their comfort zone.

The Florida Supreme Court wants each lawyer to participate in the "ONE" campaign, by representing one client each year.

When there are so many people who need help, it is easy to say "How can my taking on one case make a difference?" Well, you make a difference to that one. And you make a difference to yourself by fulfilling the highest standards of your profession.

For more information on opportunities for pro bono service throughout the 4th Circuit, attorneys are encouraged to contact Kathy Para, chairwoman, The JBA Pro Bono Committee, [email protected].

There are opportunities to assist with one-day events and some of the cases in need of placement with pro bono attorneys can be reviewed online at jaxlegalaid.org.
