The City of Jacksonville Solid Waste Division has five household hazardous waste and electronic waste mobile collection events scheduled throughout the city in 2012.
The second for this year takes place 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Ed Austin Regional Park, 3450 Monument Road.
The remaining collections are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. March 17 at Blue Cypress Park, 4012 University Blvd. N., and May 12 at the Jacksonville Beach Public Works Department, Operations and Maintenance Facility parking lot, 1460 Shetter Ave.
In the first 2012 collection, more than 200 people disposed of about 357 gallons of flammable materials, aerosols, used oil and antifreeze, 788 gallons of latex paint, 315 computer and TV parts, 15 bags of dry pesticides and 10 gallons of liquid pesticides.
Household hazardous waste
Household hazardous waste cannot be collected curbside with regular trash. Residents can bring the items to one of the scheduled mobile collection events or they can take items to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 2675 Commonwealth Ave. The facility is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.
The types of waste that can be brought to one of the mobile events or to the facility include:
• Acids
• Aerosol cans
• Antifreeze
• Drain cleaners
• Flares
• Fluorescent bulbs and tubes, including CFL light bulbs
• Fertilizer and pesticides
• Fire extinguishers
• Gasoline, diesel and kerosene
• Gun powder, ammunition and fireworks
• Paint, varnish or shellac
• Paint thinners and paint strippers
• Pool, automobile, cleaning, lawn, garden and photo graphic chemicals
• Oil and oil filters
• Rechargeable, automobile or lead acid batteries
• Thermometers and thermo stats
• 20-pound propane cylinders

E-waste
Residents can use a mobile collection or the Household Hazardous Waste Facility for recycling electronic wastes.
The types of waste that can be brought to one of the mobile events or the facility include:
• Televisions
• Computer monitors
• Computer terminals
• CPUs
• Keyboards
• Printers
• Scanners
• Stereo equipment
• Radios
• VCRs
• DVDs
• Camcorders
• Desk and mobile phones
• Pagers
• Power tools
• Small kitchen appliances (i.e. microwaves, toaster ovens)
• Health and beauty appliances
The items will be collected as part of normal garbage collection service if left at the curb. However, once the items enter the waste stream with normal garbage they cannot be recycled and are disposed of in the landfill.
The items are only collected from residences. Businesses should check for available recycling centers to arrange for the recycling and disposal of any e-wastes.
