As the 2011-12 JBA/YLS sports year winds down, James Gonzalez and I, acting as co-commissioners of the JBA/YLS Sports League, would like to extend a special thanks to all of the participants and volunteers who have helped make this past year a success. Over the past several months two sports league seasons have ended with new champions being crowned.
The first ever YLS Putt-Putt League recently concluded with the venerable foursome of Charlie Jimerson, Chris Cobb, Tim Anderson and Lenny Schoenfeld, representing the firm of Jimerson & Cobb, P.A., taking home top honors, as well as a very impressive trophy. The eight-team league met weekly at Adventure Landing on Beach Boulevard for six weeks, the final two weeks consisting of single elimination playoff matches. Sources close to Team Jimerson have attributed the team’s success in the final match to their channeling of Kevin Millar’s “Cowboy Up Red Sox,” and the now famous consumption of a pregame adult beverage. We have been unable to confirm the sources contention, as only comments from team members following the victory attributed the team’s success to preparation and steady putters.
The 2012 fall softball season concluded in December and the crew representing Fidelity, which closely resembled the ’27 Yankees, cruised to an undefeated season. Games were held at Ray Greene Park on Wednesday evenings for six consecutive weeks. While all six squads were competitive, with numerous contests being decided in the final inning, Fidelity’s modern day murderers row lineup was rarely, if ever behind. Due to the success of the league and the request by participants and nonparticipants alike, a spring softball season is set to begin March 28, 2012. Fidelity is looking forward to defending their well-deserved title; however, if the competition throughout the playoffs of the fall season is any indicator, Fidelity may have their hands full.
The 2012 kickball season got under way last week. The eight-team league meets Wednesdays at Spring Park Elementary for games at 7:00 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. The co-ed teams are made up of attorneys ranging in experience from first-years to equity partners, along with staff, family and friends. If the level of play this season is even half of what was exhibited last Wednesday, there will be many memorable moments that will certainly be the topic of conversation in conference and lunchrooms throughout the River City during the season and beyond.
The JBA/YLS Sports League offer a great opportunity to attorneys, their families and staff to join together outside of the office for some much needed and deserved recreational fun. Leagues run year-round and are open to all members of The JBA, their spouses and blood relatives, employees of law firms and one “ringer” (defined as anyone who does not fit into one of the categories listed above) per team per league.
The next season, spring softball, will begin on March 28 and registration is now open. Following softball, spring basketball will begin in April. Additionally, we are attempting to gauge the likely participation in a summer golf league. Anyone with any interest in joining The JBA golf league for one round a week, please contact either James Gonzalez or myself. More information for the upcoming leagues is available on the YLS Facebook page, and will be outlined in the monthly YLS Sports League emails. We have experienced an increase in participation throughout the past year due to the hard work of the YLS board of governors members who have been instrumental in coordinating with local firms and in garnering support and participants for the leagues. Additionally, we would like to thank the team captains of the participating teams last year for their help in ensuring the leagues operate at maximum efficiency. While we have experienced an increase in the number of participants in the leagues this past year, we are always pushing to gather even more support and involvement from JBA members and nonmembers alike. If you have any questions as to rules, participation, eligibility, registration or volunteering, please contact either James Gonzalez at [email protected], Christian George at [email protected], or myself at [email protected].
