Community involvement: Much of my volunteer time is invested with the Air National Guard. At a minimum, I am called to serve seven times per month. There are events where I have to sit alert at Homestead Air Reserve Station in South Florida. This involves sitting “ready alert,” which means I am five minutes from getting airborne in support of National Command Directives. I also have provided pro bono services for several indigent clients in civil matters and pro bono services to several military members addressing various family law, criminal and civil issues.
What have you learned/experienced through that?
A tremendous amount about organization dynamics, leadership, knowing my role as part of a professional team effort, commitment, professionalism and dedication. Really, the military has taught me everything I know about being a man.
How can others get involved?
It starts with wanting to be a part of something that is bigger than you. Being part of the Guard or Reserves is not for everyone, and once you decide that you want to be part of the military you have to find the right fit – the Air Force as opposed to the Army, Navy, Marines, etc.
What is the last book you read/are reading?
“The Tipping Point” by Malcolm Gladwell, I just started it. Previously, I read “Nature Girl” by Carl Hiaasen.
