Skyway fare-free for 90 days

One difference between Downtown and the suburbs is the availability of mass transit throughout the neighborhood.

With most fixed-route buses arriving and departing from Rosa Parks/FSCJ Station, the trolleys and the Skyway, there are more public transportation options Downtown than anywhere else in Duval County.

According to statistics provided by the Jacksonville Transportation Authority, someone boarded a Skyway train 502,941 times in fiscal year 2010-11.

That statistic might receive a bump over the next 90 days because JTA is offering the Skyway as a free service for Downtown workers and visitors as part of the transition to the new Star Card electronic payment system.

Converting the Skyway stations will be the final phase of the transition to the Star Card. With the new system online today, 1 wanted to make sure customers aren’t inconvenienced until the new fare boxes are installed, said Shannon Eller, JTA spokeswoman.

“Suspending fares provides a seamless transition between transit modes for our riders. It is most convenient for riders to use the new Star Card all the way through the system instead of having to pay cash when they reach the Skyway,” she said.
