Florida State College at Jacksonville President Steve Wallace led his first meeting Monday as president of the Rotary Club of Jacksonville. He announced that the club would focus on six areas: relevant programming; improved communication among members; more extensive orientation of new members; more connections with other Rotary clubs; creation of a unifying strategic focus; and sustainability. “We want the Rotary Club of Jacksonville to be enduring and even stronger,” he said. Wallace said he also proposes the club quickly nominate a president-elect to current President-elect Bill Mason to create three years of continuity in leadership decisions. Asked after the meeting for his response to a detailed Florida Times-Union and Jacksonville.com report on Sunday critical of his expenses as FSCJ president, Wallace said the college is performing at its highest level in its 47-year history and he outlined areas in which it has reached record levels: enrollment, fundraising, employer partnerships, degree offerings and degree completion. “We think their focus is wrong,” he said of the Times-Union’s report. “We think the focus should be on how well the college is performing.”
