Ready, set, go!

The 2012-13 YLS year is off to a strong start under the direction of YLS President Michael Orr. Despite the fact the year has just started, there is no question that President Orr will leave as his legacy for the board a strong level of energy and enthusiasm much like outgoing President Elizabeth Howard will always be known for leaving us in great financial shape and with an unmatched level of organization.

President Orr is bringing back the YLS golf tournament this fall. After a short hiatus due to the economic crunch, the YLS golf tournament is back by popular demand.

All you golfers, young and old, get ready for what is sure to be a great day on the links. A date and location will be set within the next two weeks.

While the YLS golf tournament provides a fun and competitive social outing, it also will benefit a good cause. In years past, this event has raised tens of thousands of dollars for some very worthy charities, including the Special Olympics, the Family Nurturing Center, the Sulzbacher Center and Dreams Come True.

We currently are accepting nominations for the charity who will receive the proceeds from the event. Strong preference is given to locally based charities.

If you would like to nominate a charity, or you would like to volunteer or serve as a sponsor for the event, please email [email protected] or [email protected].

Compete for The JBA Cup

Have you been working on your 5K personal best? Do you have a new chili recipe you are dying to try out? Are you thinking this is the year your team will be The JBA softball or basketball champion?

No need to hide that competitive spirit any longer. It is time to start strategizing, trading players, firing coaches and hiring consultants. After all, we are all lawyers and even you transactional lawyers out there have an innate competitive fiber in you.

We are pleased to announce that the YLS will be kicking off the inaugural season of The Jacksonville Bar Association Cup (“JBA Cup”).

Law firms and other legal organizations will receive points for their involvement in the various Bar activities, including the sports league, golf tournament, chili cook-off and Run for Cover 5K, among others.

The JBA Cup is designed so that the size of your organization does not matter, but rather, your overall participation is what is measured. Close your eyes for a moment and imagine yourself accepting the inaugural JBA Cup on behalf of your organization.

We can’t promise Wikipedia would pick you up like they have Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross and first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, but for at least a year, you could display the trophy with pride and for the rest of your legal career tell war stories of how you became the very first recipient of The JBA Cup.

Calling young lawyers

The YLS will continue its traditional programming this year with Afternoon at the Courthouse in the fall for new lawyers and Noon in June for summer law clerks and law students. We’re especially excited about these events this year since they will take place in the new courthouse.

We also are planning some courthouse tours and a judicial reception for the legal community at large. We have a great board, a tremendous volunteer base and are proud that 75 percent of the almost 800 young lawyers in Jacksonville are members of The Jacksonville Bar.

We want to reach 100 percent of the young lawyers in Jacksonville. If you are one of us, come join us. The energy and enthusiasm is contagious!
