Add the Bay Street trolley to the list of services on hold because the new Duval County Courthouse hasn’t opened on schedule.
Signs were posted on the trolley’s stops along Bay Street on Tuesday notifying riders that the service would be discontinued effective Monday, but that has changed, according to JTA spokesman John Finotti.
He said Tuesday the signs were removed and the service will continue uninterrupted for the “foreseeable future.”
Finotti said JTA’s long-term plan is to discontinue the Bay Street trolley service, but uncertainty over the opening date of the new courthouse prevents the public transportation provider from knowing when that will be.
“At this point, it’s in a state of flux,” he said.
The Riverside trolley circulates through Downtown’s core, on a route bordered by Church Street on the north, Laura Street on the east, Water Street on the south and Jefferson Street on the west.
The route includes stops near the new courthouse along Adams Street and at Hemming Plaza and the Landing.
Extensions of the core route serve parts of Bay Street between Newnan and Market streets and along Riverside Avenue to Margaret Street in Five Points. Trolley stops also are available along Bay Street between Laura and Broad streets.
The parking locations combined with the Riverside trolley route could increase ridership on the Skyway while providing access to the new courthouse, according to Finotti.
“JTA wants people to park at the Kings Avenue garage or at the convention center lots and take the Skyway to Hemming Plaza, and then get on the trolley to the new courthouse,” said Finotti.
