• The Supreme Court of Florida is considering an argument presented by juvenile justice advocate Rob Mason, who serves as director of the Juvenile Court Unit in the Office of Fourth Judicial Circuit Public Defender Matt Shirk. Mason appeared Wednesday before the court to assert the importance that juvenile defendants be fully informed of their plea consequences, specifically when there is a possibility of deportation facing a noncitizen of the United States. A decision is expected by the end of the year.
• Zeina Salam of the Law Offices of Zeina N. Salam in Jacksonville was selected as a 2012 “Rising Star” by Florida Super Lawyers in the area of general litigation.
• CBS and the Southeastern Conference announced that the annual Florida-Georgia football game will be played at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 27. Activities surrounding the event begin Oct. 24.
• Correction: A report Friday about the Downtown Development Review Board incorrectly reported that the 220 Riverside project in Brooklyn was resubmitted to the board and approved in May. The Brooklyn development that was resubmitted and approved was proposed by Lincoln Properties.
• Nicolle Piquet has joined the law firm of Boyd & Jenerette as an associate in its Jacksonville office. Piquet will practice in the areas of civil litigation, automobile liability, trucking and transportation and premises liability. She earned a bachelor’s degree in 2006 from the University of Florida and a law degree in 2009 from Florida Coastal School of Law.
• Paul C. Naugle and P. Cameron Naugle Jr. have taken over running of Naugle Funeral Home and Cremation Services as third- and fourth-generation funeral directors. The funeral home, along Hendricks Avenue in San Marco, has been locally owned and operated by the Naugle family since 1919.
• The City approved construction of the shell building for the REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.) store at The Markets at Town Center at St. Johns Town Center. James C. Hudson Jr. Construction Co. is the contractor for the $800,000 project at 4862 Big Island Drive. The company, based near Seattle, said in March that it will open its first Florida store in Jacksonville early next year. The company sells outdoor gear and clothing for camping, climbing, cycling, fitness, hiking, paddling and travel. It recruits about 50 employees for each store.
