Members of the City Council and Duval County School Board met Tuesday afternoon to forge a stronger relationship for the benefit of education.

“This can be a meeting that can set a precedent for many years to come,” said school board Chair Betty Burney.

“We’re all part of the same thing,” said Council Vice President Bill Bishop.

The setting provided an opportunity for school board members to inform Council about several education enhancement programs designed to provide expedited career and post-secondary skills.

Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals also discussed the school system’s successes with the Jacksonville Children’s Commission and Jacksonville Journey initiatives.

Board member Paula Wright encouraged Council members to visit schools in their districts.

Those visits could include lunch meetings with students and teachers in what Burney called “Chew and Chat” sessions that provide greater insight into schools.

Bishop, the incoming Council president, said he would like to schedule more of the joint meetings to benefit both groups.
