As our community continues to face a tight economy and shrinking budgets, the Daily Record has established this feature that will each week chronicle the efforts of local nonprofit organizations.
Bailey Publishing & Communications invites all members of the local nonprofit community to email news, announcements and success stories to: [email protected].
We also encourage our readers to become more aware of the needs of these worthy organizations as they continue to provide valuable services with reduced resources.

Walk and run for foundation
The 3rd annual Marty 5K Walk/Run, 25-mile Ride and 1-mile Fun Run is scheduled March 24.
The event, which had more than 750 participants in its second year, raises funds and awareness for the Memories of Love Foundation, which has served almost 1,000 families of children with a parent battling a life-threatening illness.
The families are provided an Orlando theme-park family respite and a chance to create memories at the time they need it most.
“Our goal is to provide treasured family time where children with an ill parent can return home with a suitcase full of special memories to be unpacked and relived for many years to come,” said Mel Gottlieb, co-founder of the foundation in memory of his son.
This year, the races start and finish at the Shoppes at Bartram Park. Events begin at 7:30 a.m. The ride will begin at 9 a.m.
Winners of each competition will receive cash prizes and all participants 11 years of age and under will receive a finishing medal.
There are early entry fee specials. For information or registration, visit www.drcsports.com/RaceCalendar.

College scholarships available
The partners of Northeast Florida Counts are launching the “Change Agent Leadership Scholarship” program for Northeast Florida area students worth $2,500 each to recognize visionary aptitudes and leadership abilities.
Northeast Florida Counts, a health-related quality-of-life data initiative of the Health Planning Council of Northeast Florida, will award a one-year, nonrenewable scholarship in the amount of $2,500 to help defer educational costs for a period of one year’s matriculation at any accredited two- or four-year college or university to two local students each year beginning this spring.
The two students must be legal residents of Baker, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Nassau, St. Johns or Volusia counties.
“Our goal is to attract students from all education disciplines to reinforce that even an economics, engineering or business major will see the importance of a healthy community and they will learn the economic impact of building a healthier region,” said Dawn Emerick, president and CEO of the Health Planning Council of Northeast Florida.
The scholarship recipients will be announced June 2 at the Riverside Arts Market.
The scholarship is available to students completing their last year of high school or GED program, and who have already been accepted into any accredited two- or four-year college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking student.
The deadline for applications is April 15.
Scholarship applications should be sent to Northeast Florida Counts Steering Committee, 644 Cesery Blvd., Suite 210, Jacksonville, FL, 32211, or emailed to [email protected].
