How did you get involved?
I was involved in a few community organizations prior to running for office and being elected in 2003. Once I was elected I had numerous opportunities to get further involved with various community organizations. It also allowed me the opportunity to get involved in community issues outside of formal organizations (e.g. scholarship and educational opportunities, legal aid assistance, foreclosure, etc.).
How can someone else get involved?
Simply ask. Nonprofit and community organizations need talented people who can assist. Ask others in your workplace to get you involved with organizations or suggest an organization to fit your interests.
What have you learned/achieved through the experience?
There are issues and problems facing others that I was not familiar with. My viewpoint was definitely expanded by seeing a broad range of issues.
What was the last book you read or are reading?
“Eisenhower in War and Peace,” by Jean Edward Smith.
