The Jacksonville Women Lawyers Association welcomed personal financial adviser Valerie Logan to its monthly meeting Thursday at the River Club to help its members define their “purse-onality.”

Logan related financial and handbag styles.

The bright red handbag was someone who thought of money as a means to fun. “They tend to be impulsive spenders, but the sooner they sit down with a financial planner, the better they will be in the long run,” Logan said.

That “really great shoulder bag” describes a person who sees money as important to live a comfortable lifestyle, but considers it more important to share with others, she said.

The “classic clutch” is someone who sees money as security and is a great money manager.

“They probably still have their First Communion nickel,” she quipped.

Tying the styles together was planning.

“If you have clients that are living day-by-day, they can sit down and look at their bank statement and find out where they are spending their money. It can lead to making better spending decisions,” said Logan.

Logan’s main point was the importance of life insurance to the security of a client’s family.

“There are some things we can live without, an iPhone, new car. Life insurance should be like electricity. It’s something you need to have if you have a family,” said Logan.
