• Action items on tonight’s full City Council meeting agenda include an ordinance amending the City Charter to allow the Council to appoint three, instead of the current two, members of the Police and Fire Pension board of trustees and an ordinance to create the St. Johns River Ferry Commission.
• Also on tonight’s agenda are several appointment confirmations, including five members of the Ethics Commission. One appointment not on the consent agenda and to be voted on by the Council is Twane Duckworth, Mayor Alvin Brown’s appointment to become the City’s risk manager. The Council meeting begins at 5 p.m. at City Hall.
• It’s The Players week and if you’re looking for first-time locals to support, you have a couple of options. Jacksonville native Bud Cauley and Jacksonville Beach resident Matt Every will be among a group of 16 players to compete in the tournament at TPC Sawgrass for the first time. Cauley becomes the first player to participate in the Junior Players Championship to qualify for The Players.
• Speaking of The Players, the week began Monday with a Military and Veterans Job Fair, a first for the event. Military-friendly companies, including the City, were able to demonstrate a commitment to hiring personnel transitioning from military service.
• Another site for a 7-Eleven is being prepared. The City approved demolition of a house and slabs at 3613 Lane Ave. S. at a cost of $500,000 in preparation for a 7-Eleven store.
• Correction: The City Council Courthouse Oversight Special Committee is at 5 p.m. May 14 at City Hall. The day of the meeting was stated incorrectly in Monday’s Daily Record.
