The flower baskets along Downtown’s streets are in full bloom to coincide with this weekend’s Jacksonville Jazz Festival.

The “Great Streets” program baskets have been replanted with new impatiens, coleus, zinnias, sweet potato vines, verbenas, begonias, geraniums and other flowering plants.

The varieties for each basket were chosen based on the amount of direct sun vs. shade at the location of each of the 53 suspended plant containers, said Amy Harrell, Downtown Vision Inc. director of district services.

“It’s the first time we have done that. We have tweaked the program,” she said.

Harrell said the plants were chosen for their hardiness during hot weather and the baskets will be monitored during the daily watering by the Downtown Ambassadors. If a basket seems to need more sun or shade, it will be moved to a more suitable location.

Harrell said the replanted baskets debuted this week to dress up Downtown for the City’s annual three-day music festival.

More than 100,000 people are expected to attend the event Friday-Sunday, joined by more than 30,000 fans of the U.S. Men’s National Team vs. Scotland international soccer match and about 10,000 members of the Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses who also will be in the neighborhood.

“It’s Downtown’s biggest weekend of the year,” Harrell said.
