The success of Legal Art Works has allowed owner Jeff Davis to create a new business to serve customers in the global market.
Since 2003 Legal Art Works has been producing demonstrative aids to assist the legal community to transform complex information into more understandable facts and figures. The products include animations, medical illustrations, timelines, charts and graphs.
Davis plans to bring that service to medical device companies and medical textbook publishers around the world through Qualis Media.
"We just launched and already have multiple projects going on around the U.S. We're expecting the Qualis Media to outgrow Legal Art Works sales numbers within a few short years," said Davis.
The company's name is one meant to sound "different."
"I wanted a word that people were not sure exactly what it was. Something that sounded different. The Latin word 'qualis' literally translates to 'of what kind?'" said Davis.
After graduating from Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, Davis earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Savannah College of Art and Design with a focus on visual presentations. He obtained his master's degree in medical illustration from the Rochester Institute of Technology with his master's thesis focused on medical illustration in the legal field.
Legal Art Works has grown from a small business in his parent's garage in Jacksonville to a business with a staff of seven and an office on the Southbank.
"When I first started Legal Art Works in 2003 it was part of the original vision to build a company that created medical illustrations for trial attorneys first in Jacksonville, then the state, then the country. The next phase would be to start a separate company that would create medical illustration and animation for medical device companies, surgical tool companies, medical textbook publishers and on and on," said Davis.
With the business model of Legal Art Works smoothly operating, Davis decided to look into the second phase about two years ago.
"We began developing it in 2010. In 2011 we started to do some beta testing, kind of like a soft opening. We started to get all kinds of projects from around the country and around the world. We officially rolled it out as a company in September," said Davis.
Davis will use current staff for the Qualis projects and will monitor the company's growth.
"There is down time and slow seasons with litigation and so it's a great way to fill those voids with more business," said Davis.
