• The state reported that the number of available online job openings in STEM-related fields — an acronym for science, technology, engineering and mathematics — is up sharply over the previous year, with more than 64,000 postings in September. It’s an almost 9 percent increase compared to the September 2011 report, the state said.
• Latitude 30 has teamed up with the Jacksonville Jaguars to provide the official headquarters for the team’s away games. Fans will be able to watch the Jaguars’ 2012 road games, shown in three theaters, at Latitude 30. There also will be appearances from the ROAR cheerleaders, Jaxson de Ville and the D-Line throughout the season. In addition, Latitude 30, at 10370 Philips Highway near The Avenues Mall, also will serve as the regular Wednesday night headquarters of the “Jaguars This Week” radio broadcast. • The City’s Military Affairs, Veteran and Disabled Services Department will host free career and employment counseling seminars for veterans 3-6 p.m. Thursday at City Hall.
• Operation New Hope, a nonprofit community development corporation, has teamed up with Fidelity Investments, EPIC Communities, Petra, Florida State College at Jacksonville, Lowes, Swagsonville and local artist and professor Dustin Harewood to provide a facade improvement to a Springfield structure at Fifth and North Main streets. Volunteers already have made improvements to the building by adding coats of paint and will soon transform the boarded-up windows into murals. Operation New Hope and its partner organizations hope to attract more local businesses to improve commerce and increase foot traffic along the storefront.
• Seniors on a Mission, a nonprofit that engages live-alone senior citizens in volunteer activities for local nonprofit organizations, has named Diane Herman as the organization’s development director. In her new role, Herman is responsible for increasing the organization’s funding base, which includes serving as community liaison and coordinating fundraising events. • Ashby Barth has been named associate director of events at Daniel, a nonprofit child-service agency, where she previously served as a development coordinator. Barth’s duties include the organization of Daniel’s special events, including November’s fall festival and the Daniel Golf & Tennis Classic in March. Before joining Daniel, Barth was a development administrative assistant at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens and a project coordinator at Sight & Sound Productions. She has a bachelor’s degree in tourism, recreation and sports management from the University of Florida.
