Mayor Alvin Brown will not support a resource center at the Armory building, one of seven sites the City had been considering for a day center for the homeless.

In a news release issued Thursday evening, Brown’s office said he made a “surprise visit” to the Springfield Preservation and Revitalization Council annual meeting to talk about the center.

He told the council and residents he has made no recommendation for a location and will not consider the former Armory at 815 N. Market St. in the Springfield area.

“Neither I nor the Emergency Services & Homeless Coalition of Northeast Florida have recommended any location,” he said in the news release.

Brown committed to supporting the opening of a daytime resource center for the homeless as a pilot project.

The release said it would be a six-month pilot project and operate 8 a.m.-5 p.m. three days a week, providing services but no beds.
