Fourteen Downtown parking spaces were temporarily transformed Friday into urban green spaces, patios and even the St. Johns River for PARK(ing) Day 2012.
The project began in 2005 in San Francisco when a single metered parking space was converted into a miniature park for a day.
Since then, the movement has grown to an annual event on a global scale. In 2011, 975 parks were created on the third Friday in September in 162 cities in 35 countries on six continents.
The local effort was led by Transform Jax, an organization that promotes Downtown and its surrounding neighborhoods, in cooperation with the City, Downtown Vision Inc. and the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville.
