GFS Marketplace plans in progress
The city continues to review plans for the proposed 15,975-square-foot Gordon Food Service GFS Marketplace retail store along Beach Boulevard at Brougham Avenue.
Concurrency and mobility-fee applications show the store, proposed on 1.4 acres, will provide retail sales of restaurant and chef supplies.
Edwards Engineering Inc. is the agent. The land is owned by Prosperity Bank.
As the Daily Record reported Dec. 12, Michigan-based Gordon Food Service, which operates more than 160 stores in 10 states, intends to open an almost 16,000-square-foot GFS Marketplace at 13423 Beach Blvd., west of Hodges Boulevard.
No membership fee is charged at GFS Marketplace, which sells products in large quantities similar to wholesale clubs.
Two buildings — the store and a future unidentified 4,400-square-foot, 158-seat restaurant — are shown on plans for the almost 3-acre site.
Gordon Food Service, based in Grand Rapids, was created in 1897 and is a family-owned and managed foodservice distributor.
The GFS Marketplace stores began in 1979 as a cash-and-carry to service the emergency needs of GFS truck delivery customers, and also are the primary supplier to many smaller operators who prefer to pick up their products.
There are 19 in Florida. The stores are open to the public daily. In addition to food, they also carry foodservice supplies.
Gordon Food Service says its products are packaged in large quantities that work well for large families, retail customers, event planners and others.
More Corner Bakery Café details
Jacksonville-based Regency Centers Corp. provided more details Wednesday about the area's first Corner Bakery Café that is expected to open next fall in the Shoppes on Riverside, including that the fast-casual restaurant will be franchised by LWBC, LLC.
Corner Bakery Café offers made-to-order breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as catering.
The 49,870-square-foot Shoppes on Riverside development is in the Brooklyn area of Downtown along Riverside Avenue. The $14.7 million shopping center is a development of Regency Centers and Fuqua Development.
Corner Bakery Café, based in Dallas, was established in 1991.
The Corner Bakery Cafe restaurants are owned and operated by CBC Restaurant Corp. with more than 160 company-owned and franchised locations around the country.
Permits OK'd for Cobblestone Publix redevelopment
East Arlington shoppers will soon see the Publix Super Markets Inc. store in Cobblestone Crossing be demolished and redeveloped as a larger store.
The city approved three permits Wednesday to demolish the existing Publix, build a larger store and renovate the Cobblestone Crossing façade. The address is 2771 Monument Road.
HGR Construction Inc. is the contractor for the permits, totaling $4.45 million in project costs. The demolition of the store is shown at a cost of $100,000; construction of a new 53,865-square-foot store is $3.4 million; and the canopy renovations are $950,000.
The Publix is expected to close in early January and the new store is expected to open by fall.
Panera opens in San Marco
The Panera Bread in San Marco Station opened Wednesday at 1440 Hendricks Ave. San Marco Station fronts Hendricks Avenue and is bordered by Cedar Street, Naldo Avenue and train tracks. Panera operated nearby but closed about year-end 2009. Ashco Inc. is the developer and its ashcoinc.net website defines the San Marco Station as "Jacksonville's newest upscale hotspot."
Food bites
• Dunkin' Donuts continues to file plans for its proposed 1,800-square-foot shop along Beach Boulevard, near Hodges Boulevard, next to Bojangles' Famous Chicken 'n Biscuits. Taylor & White Inc. is the engineer.
• A 1,900-square-foot "coffee shop" is planned in part of a 3,653-square-foot building at 4273 Roosevelt Blvd. The coffee shop operator wasn't identified, and its neighboring 1,753-square-foot retail tenant wasn't, either, in an application for mobility-fee review. The coffee shop has a maximum of 52 seats. The 0.6-acre site is at Roosevelt Boulevard and Beverly Avenue. A notation on the plans refers to the coffee tenant as a coffee/donut shop with a drive-thru.
• Pollo Tropical's proposed restaurant on an outparcel at the Shoppes at Bartram Park continues to move ahead. The St. Johns River Water Management District is reviewing an application for the 3,771-square-foot restaurant along Old St. Augustine Road. Previously filed site plans with the city show the restaurant will be built at 13776 Old St. Augustine Road. The Pollo Tropical Chicken on the Grill chain focuses on Caribbean-inspired, citrus-marinated grilled chicken. In addition to its signature grilled chicken, it offers slow-roasted mojo pork, salads, sandwiches and wraps. Pollo Tropical has three locations in Jacksonville.
