How did you become involved? I never had the opportunity as a boy to be involved in scouting even though I always wanted to participate, so when there was a need for a leader in a local Cub Scout pack, I volunteered.
How can someone else become involved?
Many worthwhile organizations offer opportunities to serve as a mentor to children. Scouting is especially good for busy professionals, because the programs are well-structured and provide thorough guidance on how to conduct successful meetings. The Boy Scouts of America North Florida Council and the Girl Scouts of Gateway Council, are both located in Jacksonville and would happily point you toward opportunities to serve.
What have you learned/achieved through the experience?
All individuals deserve to be treated with respect and thoughtful consideration, whether they are clients, judges, opposing counsel or young children. Children have a particularly keen way of knowing whether you care enough to plan for their activities, and their looks of boredom or disappointment quickly teach you to always be prepared.
What is the last book you read or are reading?
"Out of the Silent Planet" by C.S. Lewis. Though I never read science fiction, I recently discovered this trilogy by my favorite author and couldn't pass it up. As an audiobook, it is a wonderful diversion for a long drive home.
