Krispy Kreme approved for Westside return
Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corp. was cleared by the City to build a restaurant at 810 Cassat Ave., the location where the North Carolina-based chain closed in 2005 to the disappointment of many Westside customers after 35 years in business.
The City approved a building permit Wednesday for RPC General Contractors Inc. to build a 2,464-square-foot restaurant at the site.
The Daily Record reported in September that development site plans filed with the City also showed a drive-thru lane.
Krispy Kreme, a 76-year-old company, has two other stores in Jacksonville, at 12973 Atlantic Blvd. and 11117 San Jose Blvd.
The City OK'd the permit in December for RPC General Contractors to demolish the closed Krispy Kreme building to prepare for construction of the replacement structure.
The demolition was a $15,000 project and the construction cost of the new building is shown as $525,000.
Krispy Kreme is based in Winston-Salem, N.C., and its signature product is the Original Glazed – and that's a registered trademark – doughnut.
Established in 1937, Krispy Kreme has 731 locations around the world as well as a presence in grocery, convenience and mass merchandise stores. Its website is KrispyKreme.com.
The company opened a restaurant in Greenville, S.C., on Jan 17 and offered the first 100 guests free doughnuts for a year.
The first customer in line qualified for a dozen free Original Glazed doughnuts every week for a year and the second through 99th customers qualified for a dozen free doughnuts every month for a year.
There also were T-shirts for the first 100 customers.
A Florida Times-Union report on Dec. 14, 2005, said Krispy Kreme closed two of its four area stores – the Cassat Avenue location and one in Orange Park. The Orange Park location closed after 10 years, the newspaper reported.
Property records show the Cassat Avenue building had been constructed in 1970. Krispy Kreme owns the property, which is a little less than half an acre.
Tijuana Flats OK'd for River City Marketplace
The City signed off on a building permit for Tijuana Flats at River City Marketplace.
Construction was approved for commercial interior alterations for the restaurant at 651 Nautica Drive, Suite 2. Aspen Dental is being developed in Suite 1.
TWT Restaurant Design, Construction and Development Co. of Tampa is the contractor for the alterations at a project cost of $170,000. Plans show a 2,400-squuare-foot restaurant.
Auld & White Constructors LLC was the contractor for the shell building.
