• University of North Florida President John Delaney issued a message Tuesday to the university's campus community regarding the possibility of starting a football program. In the message, Delaney said he asked the UNF board of trustees for permission to begin discussions with faculty and students about such a program and stated "a number of universities" in the state also are looking to add the sport. He said it might negatively impact UNF's current athletic conference alignment, but also could open opportunities. The review is only exploratory and not a commitment, he said. In the message, he said that Florida public universities need an enrollment of about 25,000 students to properly support football and that most schools of that size do have the sport. "Thus football is probably inevitable for UNF at some point," the letter states, but he also said it has to financially support itself and not academically affect the school. He said the school seeks input from students, faculty, staff, donors and the community.
